WSO2 ESB is an open source project, which brings together heterogeneous environments using a service-oriented model. It was developed in 2005 by Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana and Paul Fremantle, former IBM employees’ and creators of Apache SOAP and WSIF (Web Services Invocation Framework).
WSO2 ESB is based on the Carbon platform and implements OSGi specifications common to all WSO2 products and is modular and scalable. It uses Apache Synsapse projects for the mediation component, and Apache Axis2 for web services, whose editor is the main contributor.
WSO2 is highly interoperable and supports many transport formats and protocols such as POP3, JMS, AMQP, FIX, CIFS, MLLP, SMS, SOAP, REST, EDI, HL7, OAGIS, Hessian, CORBA/IIOP.
Unlike its main competitors WSO2 ESB is 100% Open Source and does not have a chargeable premium version. Its source code is freely available on a SVN repository.

“ Complete Middleware stack offering including ESB,BPEL,BAM,Registry etc. Good Interfaces for Administration console and Product Coverage WSO2 IDE provides support to create basic component cofiguration with extensive support for Mediator customization. Single setup instance installation is simple Creating proxy services and applying setting like security can be done from the console. ”

“ WSO2 is a provider of a comprehensive suite of products for SOA architecture. My expertise is on focused in DSS products, API Manager, BAM and of course the ESB, the flagship product. It although not as well known as other products is a software that offers a multitude of possibilities to suit each customer and their needs thanks to its flexibility. It also has the possibility to be expanded very easily with connectors and customized mediators, without neglecting the cost of the license is limited to the support which makes this product a great choice for use in customers with limited spending margins. ”
