BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tool) is an Eclipse community project that includes a graph generator, a report generator and a design environment. The project was launched in 2005.
The BIRT engine is a library that generates configured and unconfigured reports in HTML, PDF, XLS, DOC and PPT formats. These reports can be complex, containing multiple tables, advanced graphs, and images. BIRT is also able to create dynamic pivot tables. The displayed data can be retrieved from different relational and multidimensional databases (HOLAP and MOLAP) and queries.
The BIRT engine can be integrated with any application developed in Java, whether it’s a web application or a “fat client” style app. This engine is already natively integrated in SpagoBI and a plugin allows to run Birt reports from the Pentaho portal. The report designer is a plug-in integrated within an Eclipse (and can also be run as a stand-alone solution).

“ J'utilise BIRT depuis 2009 pour la production de rapport que je mets ensuite en ligne sur la plateforme Vanilla ou directement sur un serveur Tomcat. Les blocages que j'ai pu avoir sur des fonctionnalités complexes ont tous été résolus grâce à la communauté sur la plateforme Birt Exchange. Nous avons demandé à ce que Birt soit intégré comme générateur de rapport à une de nos applications web. Nous avons même fait développer une application pour smatphone entièrement basée sur BIRT. ”
