Puppet is an infrastructure automation tool.
Rather than describing a series of actions to be performed, like with traditional admin tools, the administrator enters the desired end state (desired permissions, files and software to install, configurations to be applied, etc.), and Puppet automatically takes the system to the specified state, irrespective of the starting point. In this way, Puppet centrally administrates a large and heterogeneous environment.
Puppet boasts a community of enthusiastic and dynamic users, and third-party modules are made available on the PuppetForge community website.
An enterprise version as well as professional support provided by its vendor, Puppet Labs.
Puppet is written in Ruby, and is distributed under the GPL.
