Mozilla announces a new phase for its open source mobile operating system, Firefox OS. Version 2.5 of the system will be released in November, with major updates released on a semi-annual basis.

Although the open source mobile solution developed by Mozilla has had difficulty making a name for itself in the mobile platforms sector, Mozilla persists with its development work. We are familiar with the vendor’s perseverance when it comes to offering an “open, independent alternative” to the proprietary solutions that take the lion’s share of the current mobile OS market. Which is why Mozilla is providing additional details concerning future releases during the next development phases for Firefox OS.

User experience: the No. 1 priority

The user is at the heart of Mozilla’s development work, with the aim of delivering an operating system that is “clean, modern and easy-to-use, and yet powerful through its extensibility, clever design and features”.

Mozilla plans to reach this target through a combination of three development concepts: a user focus, a web platform and a project community. As a result, the Firefox OS roadmap will include a single open source core and major updates released twice a year. The first is slated for November 2015, with a version of the operating system heralded as the most personalizable and secure to date. It will boast new web APIs that offer programmers the possibility of developing extensions, as is currently the case with the Firefox browser.

To boost the visibility of its operating system, Mozilla intends to expand its developments beyond smartphones and work with its partners to access new markets, such as smart televisions. Given that strategy, it would also appear that the Internet of Things and smart objects could be choice sectors for the future of Firefox OS.
