The plug-in, which transforms WordPress into a social network platform, has released version 1.9, named Sammy, which brings several new features for users and developers.

BuddyPress 1.9 enriches the notification system for friend requests, private messages and invitations to join a group. Users are now alerted of these events via e-mail and a bubble in the top toolbar. A user interface for accessing past notifications is also available and the API for developers has been improved, states the site BuddyPress.

In relation to navigation, version 1.9 introduces context aware navigation menus. These menus adapt to users who have an account on the site.

Several new widgets are also available. The Friends Widget proposes a list of recently active, popular, and newest friends of the displayed member. The Log In Widget adds a simple “Log In” form to your site. The Sitewide Notices Widget allows the user to display Sitewide Notices from the Private Messaging component.

BuddyPress 1.9 “Sammy” makes it easier to develop plugins and themes for BuddyPress. There is also improved documentation and improved compatibility with develop.svn.wordpress.org unit-test suite.
