Nginx Inc gains $ 10 million in fundraising

The web server editor and open source reverse proxy server, among other things, raised $ 10 million in a second round of funding.

Investors are betting on Nginx are both venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates (NEA) and existing investors of the company: e.ventures, Runa Capital and MSD Capital. Aaron Levie, CEO and founder of Box, a company offering online services for file sharing and content management in cloud for businesses, also participated.

These additional funds, in addition to the 3 million raised two years ago, will allow Nginx to strengthen its development efforts and continue to expand its services and support in order to meet the growing demand of its customers. The company expects an increase in its workforce of 15 to 50 employees in 2014.

Nginx Inc. said that presently, with the boom of mobile and dynamic content, applications must withstand high traffic while ensuring a high level of performance and its services are particularly useful. Besides its web server solution (origin server), the company offers solutions for load balancing, HTTP cache, reverse proxy server for HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, POP3 and IMAP protocols.

Nginx states that according to a Netcraft study, conducted in October 2013, regarding the popularity of its web servers, Nginx is used by 15% of the websites which appear in the top 1 million most visited site. Furthermore, a study by W3Techs revealed that the server is the most used if the top 1000 sites in the world is taken into account. Apache was the winner for all the other tops: all sites, top 1 000 000, top 100 000 and top 10 000.
